One of the odd things about studying the Italian language is working out how to type accented Italian characters. These simple tricks for PC/Windows are definitely worth a try.
METHOD 1:
1. Select the Start menu, then select Settings, then select Control Panel.
2. Choose the Keyboard option and click on the Language tab.
3. Click the button and choose Italian.
4. An icon will appear in the tray field. Toggle between English and Italian keyboards as needed.
For Windows-based programs, you can also use the Character Map to insert special characters into a document. Open Character Map by clicking Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and then clicking Character Map.
METHOD 2:
1. With the NumLock key on, hold down the ALT key and strike the three- or four-digit code sequence on the keypad for the desired characters.
2. Release the ALT key and the accented letter will appear
NOTE: Consult the Italian Language Character Chart for the correct numbers.

fabulously helpful post! Thanks! I added you to our blog list too! This is also a very interesting blog with a different twist. Great story/photos about Venice too.

I forgot to say that the keyboards in Italy were slightly different than in the U.S. but I can’t remember exactly what was different. I know it was challenging when I was posting from the Internet Point in Perugia and had to use their computers!

Thanks Rosemary, I’ve started writing in Italian to i cugini di mia moglie. I’ve become hooked on these keyboard shortcuts - they really work! once you memorise the 5-6 most common ones, it becomes an unconscious habit and it very easy.
